Memorial Day is a time to honor those who have fought for our freedom. Every year groups all over the county lead their own services and tributes. Today I followed a group from the Millheim VFW as they travled to over twenty cemeteries in the Penns Valley region performing a small ceremony at each stop.
I’ve met up with this group before so was looking for a new angle when I spotted a youngster in the line during the 21 gun salute. As shoots pierced the silence and shells flew through the air he didn’t flinch among the older gentleman in the line.
I chatted with him as the group headed to the next cemetery and learned that the event is a family affair, with his grandfather and father both being vets. At the next stop I focused on his grandfather who saluted those who have passed during the playing of “Taps.”
