The wrestling season wraps up each year with a long three days in the Hershey Giant Center for the PIAA state tournament. I was sent down to cover our wrestlers on the first day of the matches, with 6 mats and hundreds of high schoolers competing.
Penn State wrestling always draws a sold out crowd to Rec Hall. Today they brought a sold out crowd to the bigger and more intimidating Bryce Jordan Center to host Iowa. The crowd was energized, and everyone leapt to their feet after big take downs moves. It was a unique event to photograph which kept me on my toes as I had a different perspective on the mat than usual, and new possibilities for player fan interaction.
Today I traveled to Hershey for the first day of PIAA State wrestling. After covering wrestling all season I was ready for the 8 mats that cover the Hershey Giant Center’s floor for the first round. This year we didn’t have as many wrestlers for me to keep track of and I’ve learned the ropes of the tournament after my three day stay there last year.
After yesterday’s basketball game in Rec Hall the court floor was lifted, the nets were taken down and a wrestling mat was placed in the center of an enthusiastic crowd. Penn State, ranked #2, hosted #6 ranked Ohio State for a Big Ten dual.
